  1.                    HAYES Microcomputer Products, Inc.
  2.                   V-series Modem Enhancer (w/CCITT V.42)
  3.
  4. The Hayes V-series Modem Enhancer, an external unit that resides
  5. between your personal computer and a Hayes Smartmodem 2400 or
  6. Smartmodem1200, brings new V-series system technology to current
  7. users of Hayes external modems.  With the V-series Modem
  8. Enhancer, your modem can take advantage of advanced V-series
  9. features--error-control, increased throughput with adaptive
  10. compression in error-control mode, automatic feature negotiation,
  11. and improved configuration capabilities--all while maintaining your
  12. modem's functionality and compatibility with other Hayes modems.
  13.
  14. Error-Control: Error-control provides a reliable means of correcting
  15. errors that may occur during transmission due to noise on the
  16. telephone line.  When your Smartmodem product, connected to the
  17. Enhancer, establishes communication with a remote V-series system
  18. product, it initiates error-control, using an ARQ protocol that
  19. automatically requests retransmission of any corrupted data.  Point-
  20. to-point error-control is achieved with Asynchronous Framing
  21. Technique (AFT) or a protocol based on the LAP-B (Link Access
  22. Protocol-Balanced) link level portion of X.25 at 2400 bps and 1200
  23. bps.
  24.
  25. Adaptive Compression: When communicating with another V-series
  26. system product, the Enhancer uses adaptive compression to increase
  27. throughput up to twice the normal data transfer, lowering both
  28. transmission costs. Adaptive compression adjusts to the type of data
  29. being transmitted, and is automatically enabled when the modem is
  30. operating in error-control mode; no user interaction or preparation of
  31. data is required at either end of the connection.
  32.
  33. Automatic Feature Negotiation--Feature negotiation automatically
  34. distinguishes between V-series hardware and other Hayes modems,
  35. then analyzes all options (including speed) available, selecting the
  36. combination that maximizes data transmission efficiency.
  37.
  38. Improved Configuration Capabilities--For the Smartmodem 1200
  39. user, the V-series Modem Enhancer's nonvolatile memory adds three
  40. conveniences previously available only in Hayes 2400 bps modems--
  41. configuration without DIP switches, storage and retrieval of two
  42. user-defined profiles (in addition to the factory configuration), and
  43. storage of four phone numbers for asynchronous autodial.  The V-
  44. series Modem Enhancer stores a variety of operating parameters in
  45. its nonvolatile memory, making even the Smartmodem 2400 more
  46. versatile.
